Taking Notes: 1920’s Men’s Fashion Styles

Every decade in history has lent a hand to shaping the way people dress. One of the iconic eras in history is the 1920s. For men, there was a certain attitude of that era that seemed to resonate strongly with a lot of people, and today, it can still be seen in a lot of ways.

Forgetting The War

When talking about 1920s men’s fashion, you will need to first consider the society that was abounding at the time. This decade was a time of opulence– a roaring and over the top era that was jolted by the stock market crash and constrained by the subsequent lean years before a world war was able to resuscitate an economic meltdown that destroyed a lot of the contemporary styles. After the First World War, those who were returning from battle and society in general didn’t want to deal with the military style or fabrics, so a whole new period was unveiled, due largely to the inspiration of designers who brought together a certain luxury to practical clothing layouts.

Simplicity and Neutral Tones Rules

To try and fit a definition of men’s fashion from this era, you would have to take out the color that many are used to right now. Think of a minimalist approach and colors that were oftentimes shades of creamy white or anything that was not “too beyond the scope” of monochrome highlighting. The whole ensemble was the focal point, which meant that contemporary style did not have individuality, but rather a uniform shape. Pinstripes, single-breasted suit jackets, club collars, fitted attire, and ties that showcased a certain geometry were all present in this era of fashion. It’s interesting to note how many of these have started to come back into popular fashion for men today.

Shaking Things Up

Wider legs, broader jackets, hats, watches, pinstripes, casual elements and even plaid all have their place in the 20s. 1920s men’s fashion has so many contradictions that it becomes a night and day difference between what men are wearing right now and what they once were wearing. Designers of our generation have blended the two, offering a touch of color and a bit of sophistication to each option. They are lighting up many runways with a certain throwback elegance that is like mixing modern day styles with “The Great Gatsby”. The ensemble as a whole is the main point of dressing in this vein and so the look should not be isolated to individual pieces. This may sound confusing, but when you look at the way designers have incorporated each element to fit today’s standard, you will see patchwork from the 20s actually fit today’s modern style.
